Mokoena: Every game like a cup final
20 April 2017
Spirits remain high in the Mthatha Bucks camp as Amathol’amnyama head into a crunch encounter this weekend with Witbank Spurs at home, says skipper Thabiso Mokoena.
The classy central midfield playmaker says the 2-0 defeat to Milano United won’t get the team down and that they are determined to remain on track to achieve their goals.
“We tried our best, it just didn’t seem to be our day. We could have played another 90 minutes, but even then we may not have scored. But credit to the guys, we kept on fighting, we kept Milano in their own half for much of the time.
“We will keep our heads up and keep on working hard. We are on a mission with our long-term goals and short-term goals. We just want to see ourselves in a play-off spot. We’ll keep on grinding, we’ll keep on working very hard,” Mokoena promised.
Last year this time Mokoena was helping Bucks for survival. He’s much happier now to be scrapping it out at the other end of the table.
“Every game now that is left is like a Cup final. You play teams that are fighting for their lives, you play teams that want to be promoted. So there’s no easy game in the NFD.
“It’s an awesome feeling to be amongst the top teams. Yes there is pressure in fighting for a play-off spot. But it’s better than to be fighting for our lives. Now we can at least sleep at night. [Last season] we were always playing those games in your minds, trying to get solutions to problems.
“I believe we’ve got a great team, coach, technical team and the supporters, home and away - we cannot ask for more."
