7 December 2015
It was a great weekend all round for Mthatha Bucks Football Club as they honoured Nelson Mandela’s Commemoration Day on several different fronts.
On Saturday, Amathol’amnyama joined up with their Chippa United counterparts to give their support and assistance to the runners at the Heroes Marathon.
The Heroes Marathon (5km, 10km‚and 42.km) was launched 16 years ago and is Athletics Transkei’s flagship event - run from Mthatha Airport to Nelson Mandela Museum, Qunu. The route to Qunu emanates the last route of the early life of the Statesman.
The marathon also celebrates Eastern Cape’s political legends, and tenacious business and academic figures and attracts dozens of foreign athletes, from as far as Malawi, Mozambique, Kenya, Namibia, Ethiopia, Lesotho, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.
On Sunday the action moved to the Mthatha Stadium, where Bucks showed great character to edge out the Chilli Boys 1-0 in the Nelson Mandela Commemoration Cup, thanks to Mashale Rantabane’s goal.
