Luck deserts Mthatha Bucks once more
23 October 2015
It was a game that could have gone either way, but Amathol’amnyama were forced home empty handed after a 1-0 loss to Cape Town All Stars at Athlone on Friday.
Neither side had many clear-cut chances in a game that that was always absorbing, but never quite burst to life in front of a good turn-out crowd, the bulk of whom were supporting the team from Mthatha.
All Stars had more of the early possession, but Bucks grew into the match and had the best chance of the opening half when home keeper Kyle Peters found himself stranded off his line, but Sihle Maso’s attempted lob was not clinical enough and Howie Davids was able to make a comfortable save off his own goal-line.
The Cape side were close to scoring 10 minutes before the break when Thapelo Mathibe’s header looped onto the roof of the net.
The game remained tightly contested after the restart, Bucks at times showing promise in possession, but failing to find penetration where it mattered.
Stars were reduced to 10 men in the 72 nd minute when Phetso Maphanga received a second yellow card for a foul on the edge of his box.
But the Cape side did not allow their numerical disadvantage to get them down and instead found it within themselves to score what tuned out to be the winning goal, eight minutes from time.
Mandilakhe Qambela was the match winner, netting with a sublime left-footed strike from 25-yards out which made an empty net bulge after Bucks keeper Lucky Mshumpela had found himself grounded making a previous clearance.
Despite the defeat, Bucks' substantial support base at Athlone stayed long after the game to cheer their team off the pitch and to encourage them in their future endevours.
